Cap & Trade Town Hall

The 'Biggest Tax Ever'
is Cooling in the Courts of Public Opinion

Citizens for Lower Cost of Living brought in Russ Harding from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy to explain to the public concerns about global warming and the Cap and Trade tax awaiting Senate consideration. Topics discussed were if, indeed, global warming exists and, if so, whether it is man-made. Mr. Harding also compared the viability and cost of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar energy. Finally, he spoke about the impact of this legislation on every household and its potential to encourage manufacturers to relocate facilities (jobs) to countries where they can produce at lower cost. Mr. Harding explained that similar measures have been attempted in Spain and other parts of Europe, all with dismal results, not unlike government-run healthcare.

Some of the interesting facts and figures related to global warming and Cap & Trade that were shared include:

Consensus is a political thing.

Science isn't based on consensus, but discovery.

Wind farms can't produce more than 30% of our energy, mostly because of a lack of wind and correct atmospheric conditions.

Electricity is the single thing which raises women's wellbeing throughout the world because in third-world countries they burn dung and coal which harms their lungs, etc. Obama wants to curb electricity consumption which would harm women's longevity.

CAP and TRADE:  (a job-killer)

Puts a cap on energy use

They will say you have to generate a certain percentage of energy from alternative sources such as wind and solar energy, however these methods of producing energy significantly less efficient

Creating one green job will eliminate 2.2 existing jobs - Spain has 19% unemployment due to green jobs and several companies have moved out of Spain. A similar pattern has happened in Germany.

Will drive utility (energy) companies out of the country

Will create (soft) corruption. Unlike 'hard corruption' (money paid under the table), soft corruption trades favors, projects and grants. Corruption kills free markets and kills the rule of law

Won't be able to sell house without energy audit.  MAY COST THE SELLER THOUSANDS

"Climate-Gate"--emails obtained by hackers reveal that those promoting this legislation are aware that scientific findings do not support the theory of global warming on which legislation is based.

Science has become politicized instead of pure because many scientists seeking grants are reluctant to take a position unpopular with an administration or those in control of the grant

Most Americans believe in conservation, or traditional good stewardship. But, it is not the same thing as modern environmentalism, a secular worldview that hinges on being a religion

Government is a force of law. The more force (power) it has, the fewer rights (power) you have.

--You can't raise taxes enough to pay the debt

--MICHIGAN AND THE MIDWEST WILL BE MORE IMPACTED THAN OTHER AREAS (THE WEST AND NORTHEAST)  WITH CAP AND TRADE BECAUSE OBAMA IS AGAINST COAL, AND MICHIGAN GETS HER COAL RELATIVELY CHEAPLY DUE TO THE GREAT LAKES' WATERWAY

Cap and trade puts severe restraints on energy use

We have vastly greater amounts of natural gas readily available now in the US than ten years ago

Europe uses diesel which works quite efficiently
