Guns = Security and Freedom

This week I was listening to a retired policeman, now a judge, remembering the good old days when he fought crime. He stated that he liked it better before all the gun laws were being changed to allow so many people to carry pistols. He understood the constitution, and said that reasonable people could disagree about the interpretation, however, he always felt safer when he knew that only he and the “bad guys” had guns when he went on a call. I have heard this or similar arguments before.

Let us start with the idea that although he may have felt safer, he most probably was not. Criminals have always had weapons and they do not take the time to attain then in a legal manner. This means that every time he went on a run, he never knew if the “bad guy” was armed. If this made him feel safer, it was a false sense of security.

Although he may have felt safer, the average citizen was not. The saying is that the police are only minutes away …… when seconds count. As less restrictive gun laws have been enacted, crime statistics have gone down. In 2001 when the less restrictive concealed weapon permits were to be allowed here in Michigan we were told that it could only lead to more gun violence. That by making concealed pistols “shall issue” at our county gun boards we would have blood running in the streets and be no different than Dodge City of the Old West. Fortunately none of this has come true here or anywhere else that more citizens are legally carrying weapons to defend themselves.

Recently the battle for gun ownership has shifted to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., New York and Chicago. Mayor Bloomberg of New York strongly opposes a personal right to own guns even for self defense. He has stated that his main reason for opposition is because “We all know that most violent crime involves illegal guns.” Luckily we can agree that illegal firearms a problem. Part of the solution is to legally allow the citizens to own firearms and use them for self defense. This will not reduce the number of criminals but will reduce the number of victims.

We are lucky here in Michigan. Our right to gun ownership is embedded in our State Constitution. The Michigan Constitution states that “Every person has a right to keep and bear arms for the defense of himself and the state.” (emphasis is mine) Responsible citizens of every state should be allowed to defend themselves. They have a right under the U.S. Constitution and we should all support them. None of us should stand by and allow freedom to be stifled or taken away. As Benjamin Franklin has been quoted “ Any society willing to give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”
