2016 Essay Competition

Essay Topic:

James Madison observed in Federalist #10 that, "...pure democracies....have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths." In light of Article IV, Section 4, of the U.S. Constitution: is the United States a Democracy or a Republic, and why is the distinction significant?

Essay Length: 500 to 1000 words

Scholarship Awarded to Winner: $500.00

Who May Enter: This scholarship competition is open to all St. Clair County graduating high school seniors who have been accepted to a college, university or trade school for the 2016-2017 school year.

Submission Deadline: Friday, April 29, 2016
